Job-related formaldehyde exposure and ALS mortality in the USA
نویسندگان
چکیده
Animal models and in vitro experiments suggest neurotoxic effects of formaldehyde that may be relevant for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Formaldehyde induces neuronal τ protein misfolding and aggregation, leading to neuronal apoptosis. Formaldehyde also increases mitochondrial membrane permeability and causes oxidative damage partly by reducing superoxide dismutase activity, mechanisms implicated in ALS. Studies have had mixed findings regarding formaldehyde exposure and ALS mortality. A large prospective study found an elevated risk that did not quite reach statistical significance, but found a strong dose–response relationship with total years of exposure. Two studies found no significant association, 2 although one found a suggestion of elevated risk among the very highly exposed. We examine here the association of ALS mortality with job-related formaldehyde exposure in the National Longitudinal Mortality Study (NLMS), a US-representative cohort with occupation data collected prospectively.

Proportional mortality patterns among chemical plant workers exposed to formaldehyde.
To examine the possible health risks associated with occupational exposure to formaldehyde a proportional mortality analysis was conducted on deaths occurring between 1950 and 1976 among 136 men who had been employed a month or more in one of five formaldehyde-related areas of a large chemical producing plant located in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. Overall, no statistically significant exce...
متن کاملAdverse effects of long-time exposure to formaldehyde vapour on testicular tissue and sperm parameters in rats
Formalin is widely used in industry and in medicine (as tissue fixative and disinfectant). It contains reactive molecules which have been known for its cytotoxic effects. To evaluate the effect of formalin exposure on the testicular tissue and sperm parameter from neonatal period through physical and sexual maturity, 28 male Wister rats were assigned into two equal test and control groups. The t...

Background: Formaldehyde (FA) is a member of aldehyde family with a simplest organic molecule, used in various industries. Since there is simultaneous exposure of formaldehyde and noise for workers in most of the workplaces and that noise can reinforce the harmful effects of some chemical pollutants. This study aimed to investigate the effects of simultaneous formaldehyde and noise exposure on ...

Background: This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of simultaneous formaldehyde (FA) and noise exposure on the sperm kinematic parameters sexual hormones in male mice. Materials and Methods: Forty eight NMRI adult male mice were randomly assigned to control group and experimental groups which were exposed to formaldehyde vapour (10 ppm) (F), noise (100 dB) (N), and simultaneous ...
